ICD-10: Gone are the Days

ICD-10—Potpourri:
General State of Readiness- How you can & should be Preparing for the Inevitable, Part 4 of 4

ICD-10 Heralds the Death of the Superbill

This article goes into a bit more detail, but I think you can gather from the above discussions that a superbill just isn’t going to be super enough to cut it for ICD-10.  Gayl Kirkpatrick, from 3M HIS Consulting Services, gave an example from a hospital her team consulted with. "We took a two-page superbill in ICD-9 and translated that into ICD-10," Kirkpatrick said. "It became a 48-page superbill." (1)

And you thought a little extra documentation was going to be unpleasant… an increase from 2 to 48 pages to rummage through?  THAT is paperwork my friend.

The ICD-10 EHR (Electronic Health Records) Connection

“Implement an EHR you must, if the dark side you do not want to dominate your future.”  Yoda

Ok, Yoda never said that, but if he were in your office, spouting wisdom in your ear, I’m sure it would sound something like it.

The next logical step in ICD-10 Preparation- How are you going to handle the added documentation and additional coding complexities in your office without implementing an EHR in your office?  I’m just saying- logic, needs, and the government devil all got together to create this perfect healthcare storm.  I do not think you will be able to survive, let alone thrive in healthcare’s future, unless you succumb to the inevitable and step forward into EHR.  If you haven’t implemented an EHR in your office yet (even if you don’t give a fig about the government’s EHR incentives), I would add EHR to the list of things you should consider as preparation for ICD-10.
