5010 - You should be doing it now!

Since 3/31/2012 was the last deadline for mandatory 5010 electronic claims, you should be doing 100% 5010 now. Genius believes everything is working well in THOMAS including commercial claims. We have heard of few problems.  The few that are having problems are payors trying to get things set up at their end to handle 5010 claims- including Health Plus (in MI), some DME, and the occasional other insurance company (& you can do an "exception" to 5010 billing for just those insurance companies that are still requiring 4010 only for now).

If you have not started 5010, then head over to http://www.geniussolutions.com/5010 and watch the video to get an overall look at what you need to do. Then follow the particular instructions for your clearinghouse found on that same web page.

If you are just starting 5010, we recommend you backup, then AutoUpdate your THOMAS, then follow the step-by-step instructions.  A day after transmitting your 5010 files you should be able to pick up response files. You can check the Frequently Asked Questions on the http://www.geniussolutions.com/5010 page and probably find the answer and what to do to correct issues yourself.

We expect all the payors, clearinghouses, and even our own phones to be receiving a large volume of calls over the next few weeks as the late adopters start using the new format. We encourage you to fax your rejection to us at 586-751-3016 along with your name, practice name, phone number, and best time to call. We hope this will reduce your wait time on the phone calling us, and expedite answers to your issues.

We have multiple reports that CMS has extended the 5010 deadline for enforcement until July 1, 2012.

Genius still strongly recommends you move to sending all your claims in the new 5010 format as soon as possible.

Even with CMS extending the deadline for enforcement, that does not mean your payors or clearinghouse are required to take the old 4010 any longer.

We have asked WPS Medicare and BCBSM for an announcement if they intend to continue accepting the old 4010 past 3/31/2012. They both said "we are currently operating with the April 1 deadline". They did however say they were looking for clarification on CMS's latest announcement and may change that date.

We recommend you not wait and risk non-payment. We believe THOMAS is working well with 5010 now, and there is no reason to delay.
