From Concussions to Medical Necessity

Dr. Arkfeld (Ted A. Arkfeld, DC, MS) held a great Concussion seminar here at Genius Solutions last week. Ted is amazing and he always brings extras... extra new gear to try and love, ways to improve and add to the offerings your office can give to improve the lives of your patients, and how to best improve your bottom line... often with gear you already have (plus I know how much he loves to make sure you are fed).  If you have never seen him live - I strongly recommend you take the opportunity when it is next given. You won't regret it. He has a love of chiropractic, chiropractors, and patients that you don't always get to see or experience. And his knowledge of coding and documentation can't be beaten.

Get Better at Coding, Get Paid Better

In case you haven't thought about it in a while... here is a little article he sent my way on medical necessity and his mini Clinical Genius course - in case you would like a refresher.
Medical Necessity is simply why we get paid for services rendered to a patient who has insurance. Most carriers follow Medicare's definition:

The patient must have a significant health problem in the form of a neuromusculoskeletal condition necessitating treatment, and the manipulative services rendered must have a direct therapeutic relationship to the patient's condition.

How do you support medical necessity?
This is accomplished by appropriate documentation and correct coding for the services provided.

Why must you establish medical necessity? To be reimbursed for your services and to avoid post-payment audits.

In our Clinical Genius Program, we take you step-by-step on how to choose Evaluation & Management Codes that begin the process of medical necessity and that will plug leaks in your revenues.

In our mini-courses, we teach you how to document your orthopedic and neurological tests so you can support your selection of ICD-10 codes. Medical necessity is won or loss with your diagnosis codes and documentation, we provide the education on how to win.

So stop being denied by carriers, quit the frustration and worry in dealing with Medicare, and let us help you get back to focusing on patients and not on paperwork.
